According to sources who spoke with the Financial Times on Monday, discussions have already advanced to the point that negotiations about which units of the business TMTG will keep and which will be divested are already occurring.

Shares of the two companies were propelled by these reports with Bakkt stock experiencing a 162% surge and multiple trading halts on Monday amid a spike in volatility while shares of TMTG experienced a 13.3% increase once these rumors captured the attention of mainstream media.

TMTG Has Cash, Bakkt Needs It

TMTG has been struggling to deliver positive results to investors and reported a substantial net loss of $363 million during the first nine months of its 2024 fiscal year while producing just $2.6 million in revenue throughout this same period.

However, investors – many of which are die-hard Trump supporters – have managed to keep the company’s market capitalization at $7 billion despite the lack of a solid business model that justifies this valuation.

Meanwhile, Trump Media’s latest quarterly report shows that its cash reserves stood at nearly $673 million.

On the other hand, just days ago Bakkt reported total revenues of $328.4 million produced during the third quarter of 2024 and a small net loss of $6.3 million. However, the company has made some troublesome statements about its financial stability that questioned its ability to stay afloat.

Bakkt’s liquid reserves stood at around $36 million by the end of this past quarter (excluding customers’ funds and restricted cash) while it burned nearly $20 million during this same period.

“In October, given the considerable margin compression we’ve seen in the custody space, we began investigating a possible wind-down and dissolution of Bakkt Trust due to its lack of market traction and high cost of capital due to regulatory requirements. As this process has progressed, we have also worked to find strategic alternatives for Bakkt Trust,” the firm’s CEO, Andy Main, commented in the press release that accompanied the quarterly report.

Trump Media may not be interested in this business unit either as it has proven to be a burden for Bakkt’s core trading business amid the elevated cost of regulatory compliance.

Trump’s Political Connections May Facilitate the Deal

The acquisition of Bakkt could be linked to Trump’s political influence as the former CEO of the crypto trading firm, Kelly Loeffler, was appointed co-chair of the President elect’s inauguration committee.

Loeffler is also married to the head of the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), Jeffrey Sprecher. She left the CEO position at Bakkt after she was appointed to the US Senate by the Governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp.

The connection to the deal seems obvious as ICE founded Bakkt and currently owns 55% of the platform. Back in 2018 when the company was registered, it counted on major backers such as Microsoft, Starbucks, and venture capital firms like the Fortress Investment Group.

The timing of this acquisition is also interesting as Trump officially launched his company’s new decentralized finance (DeFi) venture called World Liberty Financial just weeks before the election.

According to some reports, the Trump Organization holds a big chunk of the total supply of the WLFI token and is entitled to receive up to 75% of the trading fees that the token generates.

The acquisition of Bakkt would fit into a growing interest in the crypto sector at a point when industry observers and major players in the space expect that his administration will push forward comprehensive legislation to bring some much-needed regulatory clarity to the industry.

In addition, Trump’s election win has catalyzed a significant surge in the value of cryptocurrencies with Bitcoin already surpassing the $90,000 mark in the past few days while the overall valuation of crypto assets exceeded $3 trillion for the first time in history as per data from CoinMarketCap.

Considering the significant tailwinds that the sector is experiencing, scooping up Bakkt’s at a point when the firm is struggling financially, which has possibly depressed its valuation, may prove to be a great deal for TMTG.

Truth Social, the flagship right-leaning social media platform endorsed and promoted by Trump, only has around 76,000 daily active users compared to X’s massive user base of 100 million.

Meanwhile, Bakkt is struggling to stay listed on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange as it recently received a delisting notice that forced the company to perform a 1-for-25 reverse split.

Financial experts have offered mixed perspectives on the deal. University of Florida finance professor Jay Ritter noted: "The only thing Trump Media has demonstrated they're good at is selling overvalued equity."

The investigation points to a specific pattern that involves purchasing certain digital assets, using his massive fan base – consisting of over 325 million followers – to promote these cryptocurrencies and then sell them once the price skyrockets.

One case in particular involving the gaming NFT marketplace, SuperVerse, stands out. MrBeast reportedly received 1 million tokens in exchange for $100,000 as part of a pre-sale of the platform’s native token.

He managed to turn this investment into nearly $10 million by promoting the pre-sale among its fans.

“We have a wallet that both investigations traced to Mr Beast sending $100,000 to the presale wallet. We have the same wallet getting millions of these Super tokens in a period of unlocks which were almost all sold aggressively,” Coffeezilla stated in regard to this incident.

Other tokens named in the report include Eternity Chain, PolyChain Monsters, and SHOPX, all of which were also allegedly pumped by the YouTube celebrity and his team and then sold after they experienced price surges.

Coffeezilla is best known for its deep-dive investigations into cryptocurrency scams. In the case of MrBeast, he released a nearly 25-minute video detailing his findings. While he was careful enough to note that there's "no concrete proof" of MrBeast's direct involvement in the scheme, the investigator described the situation as "wrong, stupid, and unethical."

Coffeezilla also highlighted potential insider trading involving other prominent YouTubers and crypto personalities, including KSI, LazarBeam, and Alex Becker. The similarities in their crypto trading activities have raised significant red flags among blockchain analysts.

According to court documents, the account was created in November 2023, almost exactly a year after the exchange filed its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The account contains several different digital assets including Ripple (XRP), Cardano (ADA), and Solana (SOL) that were valued at around $8.5 million.

Authorities emphasize that the money was used for illegal activities. The account’s origins were traced back to 2021 when Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX, transferred nearly $40 million worth of USDT from a wallet owned by Alameda Research.

His intention was to bribe Chinese officials to unfreeze around $1 billion worth of assets that were held in two accounts at different crypto exchanges based in China.

After the bribe was completed, the funds were moved through multiple private wallets and were finally deposited in this Binance account that is now being targeted by the DOJ.

Caroline Ellison, the former head of Alameda Research, reported that the total bribe paid to Chinese officials amounted to $150 million and confirmed that these funds were used for this purpose.

“After confirmation the accounts were unfrozen, Bankman-Fried authorized additional payments to be made in the amount of tens of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency to complete the bribe,” prosecutors argued.

"Certainly that's what crypto fans would want," she said. "They want the sheen of legitimacy to be brought to crypto, but they don't want regulations to be too onerous to stop opportunities and innovation."

The DBS Bank was the institution selected to serve as the primary banking partner for the project. Volatility indicators are reaching levels not seen in months as market participants are keeping an eye on how the tight race between the two contenders – Kamala Harris and Donald Trump – unfolds.

The Bitcoin Implied Volatility Index (DVOL) from Deribit has experienced a 63% increase in the past 12 months and has reached its highest level since July this year.

Meanwhile, the 7-day implied volatility has jumped by 74.4% on an annualized basis while the realized volatility is standing at 41.4%. The significant difference between these two metrics implies that traders are preparing for large price swings that would occur around the day that the election takes place.

In addition, traditional markets are also experiencing some turmoil. For example, the implied volatility of Treasury notes has reached 135% - a percentage not seen since October 2023. In a similar fashion, the all-important EUR/USD forex pair has seen its one-week implied volatility rise to its highest levels since March 2023 when the US banking sector experienced a minor crisis.

Bitcoin (BTC) Books Heavy Losses After Technical Double-Top

The price action of Bitcoin has also been quite volatile lately. Last week, it surged near its recent all-time highs at $73,600 and then collapsed to its current level of around $68,000 for a 7.6% drop in less than 7 days.

This movement coincides with a change in the perception of bettors as the odds of a Trump win shrunk in the past week. However, wagers in the prediction market Polymarket still favor the Republican candidates with a 58.2% chance. Other platforms like Kalshi and Robinhood have slightly better odds for Harris.

Trump started to gain an edge over Harris at the beginning of October as they were head-to-head on Polymarket at that point.

Meanwhile, the decline is not good news for Bitcoin (BTC) from a technical perspective as there has been some significant resistance around the $72,000 - $73,000 area. This second rejection of a move above $73,800 results in the formation of a double-top – a bearish technical formation that is often followed by a dramatic decline in the value of the asset. It's important to note that technical analysis isn't entirely predictive and is often more of an art than a science so take these indicators with a grain of salt.

Market analysts identify $69,200 as a crucial level to reclaim on lower timeframes while they claim that the $65,000-$66,000 range should be an area of "persistent demand."

Past Presidential Elections Have Led to Short-Term Dips

Changes in poll results in crucial swing states have closed the gap between Harris and Trump to 48% each according to surveys from The New York Times and Siena.

Meanwhile, a well-known poll that provides a glimpse into who undecided voters may ultimately support gave Harris a two-point edge over her contender.

This level of uncertainty affects the price of Bitcoin as Trump is generally considered the most pro-crypto candidate of the two. Any drop in his odds of winning may result in an increase in BTC’s short-term volatility.

Maria Carola, CEO of crypto exchange StealthEX, indicates that BTC has behaved quite differently during election times but has mostly experienced declines. In 2020, for example, the price of the digital asset dropped by 6.1% while, during the 2016 election, its value plummeted by 10.2%.

It is worth noting that although Presidential elections have mostly been unfavorable to BTC, market conditions have changed significantly lately.

For example, the cryptocurrency recently experienced its fourth halving – an event that immediately reduces its rate of inflation and tends to push the value up in the long term – while the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States has attracted institutional interest and billions of dollars in capital inflows to the market.

Carola emphasized that most of these drops have been temporary as they were followed by significant post-election rallies. In 2016, the market saw Bitcoin surging to $1,110 while the price surpassed $40,000 right after the 2020 election.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs Book Largest Single-Day Capital Inflows Since March

Institutional interest in Bitcoin continues to be robust despite the short-term uncertainty that this electoral event brings to the table. Data shows that inflows to Bitcoin ETFs have surged lately. The group of funds tracking the spot price of Bitcoin recorded net inflows of $917.2 million in a single day this last Wednesday. This has been the largest one-day increase since March.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT.O) alone attracted $872 million in positive capital flows. This was the largest one-day figure since the fund was launched in January.

Meanwhile, the derivatives market has also seen a spike in activity as open interest on crypto exchanges for this type of instrument jumped to an all-time high of nearly $44 billion. The implied volatility of the Deribit index suggests that traders are preparing for a 4% price swing in either direction until November 8.

While the outcome of the election is still quite an uncertain variable, crypto enthusiasts maintain a long-term bullish outlook for Bitcoin. Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Fund, suggests that the current Bitcoin ETF trend indicates the market's resilience to political outcomes.

However, analysts warn that a Harris victory could trigger short-term price declines as traders may opt to deleverage their positions due to the relative obscurity of her views and plans for the sector. This doesn't mean that the crypto market sees a Harris presidency as entirely devastating for the industry, but it does seem to clearly prefer Trump.

The market is also watching other important economic events this week like the Federal Reserve meeting on Thursday. Depending on the result of the meeting, it could impact crypto prices even more than the election.

Most economists anticipate a 25 basis point rate cut, while other market-moving events include the US trade balance and ISM service index releases on Tuesday, labor market data on Thursday, and the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index on Friday.

The 2024 election is considered a major event for the crypto industry as it has become a prominent source of donations to politicians during this cycle.

With over 40% of Americans now holding some form of cryptocurrency, both major political parties are currently supporting, one more than the other, supportive legislation for the sector. Trading Volumes Drop Sharply Compared to First Quarter of 2024

A closer look at Coinbase’s quarterly performance reveals some concerning trends associated with its trading activity primarily. During these three months, trading volumes declined sharply to $185 billion. This is the second consecutive quarterly decline that the platform has experienced. During the first quarter of the year, Coinbase reported trading volumes of $312 billion and then, the next quarter, volumes dropped to $226 billion.

CEO Brian Armstrong addressed these challenges during the shareholder call, emphasizing the company's strategic efforts to reduce dependence on volatile transaction fee revenue. "We've made a big effort to diversify our revenue over the years away from transaction fee revenue, which is more volatile. It's not as predictable. It's more market-dependent," he explained.

The upcoming US presidential election has emerged as a crucial catalyst for both Coinbase and the broader cryptocurrency industry.

In their letter to shareholders, Coinbase's leadership expressed optimism about the industry’s future regardless of the outcome of this event. The leadership team noted a significant shift in political attitudes toward cryptocurrencies.”

"Both presidential candidates, as well as politicians across the political spectrum, have adopted more favorable positions toward crypto, a significant shift from previous years," the company stated.

Meanwhile, Wall Street analysts have also identified the election as a potential turning point for the crypto industry. For example, Canaccord analysts have maintained a buy rating on Coinbase stock with a $280 price target as they believe that a change in the regulatory regime following the election could lead to the dismissal of the current Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) case against Coinbase.

In addition, JMP Securities opted to keep an outperform rating with a $320 price target for COIN as they anticipate "greater clarity and building consensus among legislators on both sides of the aisle in the coming months."

This potential for increased regulatory clarity combined with growing institutional adoption of digital assets and the company's strategic initiatives could significantly influence the trajectory of Coinbase stock in the coming months.

Ubisoft Has Said Little About the Game Almost a Week After Its Official Release

Champions Tactics was launched on October 23 but it is not featured on Ubisoft’s website and it wasn’t promoted via its social media accounts as usual either.

Three years ago, Ubisoft launched its NFT marketplace called Quartz. The company was criticized for launching a half-baked marketplace that did not demonstrate any sort of commitment to developing the web3 space or supporting the adoption of this type of digital asset. Unsurprisingly, it failed to attract a user base.

Back in 2022, the CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, commented that the firm was "still in research mode, I would say, when it comes to NFTs."

"We really look at all the new technologies. We are very much on cloud, on the new generation of voxels, and we're looking at all the Web3 capabilities,” he added.

“We tested a few things recently that are giving us more information on how it can be used and what we should do in the universe of video games. So we are testing ground with some games, and we'll see if they really answer the players' needs,” Guillemot asserted.

None of these comments showed that the company truly believed in the power of Web3. This is one of the reasons why the launch of this latest NFT game is a bit controverted as it appears that the company has no clear strategy when it comes to its plans concerning the blockchain space.

Champions Are Priced from $7 to $63,000

The Champions in Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles are not just in-game characters. They were created as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can be bought, sold, and exchanged as part of the game’s natural dynamics.

These digital assets live on the Oasys blockchain and players can acquire them by either forging them from existing champions or buying them via the Champions Tactics marketplace.

The range of prices is absolutely astounding. One champion is sold for as low as $7 while the most expensive character costs as much as $63,000. This ample gap is justified by various factors like stats, abilities, and their rarity.

It appears that Ubisoft is attempting to give some of these characters “collectible” status to generate revenue and entice Web3 investors.

The company has opted to charge a 6% royalty fee for every transaction made in its marketplace to produce additional revenue from the game’s domestic economy.

Ubisoft has also created a VIP status for players who own the most valuable or the highest number of champions. This privileged status comes with multipliers for the experience points earned during the game and may also increase the player’s in-game rewards. The scheme seeks to incentivize a continuous financial investment into the game’s ecosystem.

Is This NFT Game a Cash Grab by Ubisoft?

According to Francois Bodson, studio director at Ubisoft Paris, the project is an innovative experiment that seeks to explore new gaming experiences. In a statement sent to IGN, he commented that the game was the result of a collaboration with the company’s Strategic Innovation Lab.

"The team inside the Ubisoft Paris studio developing Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles partnered with Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab and Oasys to ensure that our use of blockchain was done in service of delivering new and innovative gaming experiences for our players,” Bodson emphasized.

He also delved into the details of how Champions are created. They are primarily crafted from pre-existing assets, which ensures that any variations of the characters stay relatively close to the designers’ core model.

The game hasn't been publicized much, perhaps because it would hurt Ubisoft's reputation. The few critics who have seen the game are already calling it a shameless cash grab.

Most NFTs Are Worthless Now. Why is Ubisoft Launching an NFT Game Then?

Champion Tactics was released at a horrible time as the NFT market cratered over a year ago, losing most of its trading activity and volume. Researchers have suggested that approximately 95% of all NFTs issued are currently priced near zero.

No Additional Fees Will Be Charged to Access the Service

To ensure that customers’ assets are well protected, Binance will allocate customers' funds in segregated accounts and they will retain full visibility via the Binance’s Proof of Reserves Page.

The crypto exchange aims to provide a high degree of transparency with this move to overcome the usual objections that high-net-worth customers may have regarding the safety of the platform.

The platform will charge its standard trading fee structure. No special discounts are being offered to wealth managers or customers at the time although eligible users who qualify for the VIP Program may receive fee rebates.

Thus far, three brokers have received licenses to legally provide crypto trading services in the country while another fourteen have submitted applications that are currently under review.

During the Hong Kong Fintech Week, an event that brings together professionals, leaders, and regulators from this industry, Eric Yip, the head of the intermediaries department at the SFC, commented that the agency will be publishing a finalized list before the end of 2024 with all of the platforms who will receive licenses in replacement of provisional permits.

Meanwhile, these companies will have to submit themselves to a final review from a third-party auditing firm to ensure that they meet the highest operational standards before obtaining an unrestricted license.

Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, shared the government’s plans to provide tax incentives for crypto investments. This move expands on the exemptions that have already been extended to the sector for unified funds and family-owned investment holding vehicles.

“Hopefully, by expanding the availability of tax concessions to this wider scope of assets eligible under our fund regime and our family office regime, we will be able to add that extra impetus and pull to this [Hong Kong] market on their development front,” Hui commented during his Fintech Week intervention.

The government appears to be catering to a growing demographic of young investors who have been lured to the crypto sector amid the promising returns that the market has produced in the past 14 years or so.

In contrast, traditional stock traders are 40-year-old individuals who seem to be skeptical of this market’s appeal or credibility.

Virtual asset transactions in Hong Kong have grown rapidly amid the success of its market development strategy.

On Sunday, the most prominent financial market in the country, the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX), announced that it will launch a Virtual Asset Index Series for Bitcoin and Ether that will trade during Asia-Pacific time zones as the popularity of digital assets continues to rise.
